It's that time of the year again. The Daily Bulletin explains:
On Sunday, teams from Aliso Viejo; Glendale, Ariz.; Mill Creek, Wash.; and Boise, Idaho; advanced to the West and Northwest tournaments, which are held in San Bernardino's Al Houghton Stadium. All told, 12 teams from 11 western states will play in the tournament, which begins Friday and concludes with a pair of nationally televised games Aug. 9 and 10.
The Western Regional Tournament is the final step in qualifying for the Little League World Series, an event that has become a worldwide phenomenon with live television coverage of every game. Playing the games are 11- and 12-year-old boys - although there are some 13-year-olds and the occasional girl - but the level of play often attracts huge crowds, including more than 10,000 in San Bernardino.
